King of the Lake to attract elite field of disc golfers

The annual King of the Lake tournament put on by Tahoe Mountain Sports will bring disc golf professionals and amateurs to Lake Tahoe and Truckee from today through Sunday.

The tournament serves as the highest profile and third event in the Sierra Tahoe Series, which includes eight tournaments from Reno to Tahoe to Markleeville.

Action will be fierce, with golfers playing five 18- to 27-hole rounds at five different courses over three days.

“This is truly one of the most exciting and demanding formats for a disc golf tournament,” said David Polivy, tournament director and owner of Tahoe Mountain Sports. “Not only are we attracting top disc golfers to our region, but we are able to show off our great courses, welcoming communities and big, beautiful lake so these players come back in the future and bring their friends and families.”

A PDGA-sanctioned, “A” Pro/Am event, the King of the Lake tournament attracts athletes from across Northern California and Nevada and from as far away as Arizona, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Oregon and even British Columbia.

The elite field will contend for the biggest purse in the Sierra Tahoe Series, with over $15,000 in cash and prizes on the line.

Competition begins today at the Bijou and Zephyr Cove courses on the South Shore. The tournament continues the following day at Truckee’s Sierra College and Truckee River Regional Park courses. It concludes Sunday, with the final rounds at North Tahoe Regional Park in Tahoe Vista.

Registration for the 180-player event opened Jan. 1 and sold out within 72 hours. Included in the high-caliber field of competitors are top-ranked PDGA talents such as Nikko Locastro, James Proctor and Richard Wysocki.
