Local sports roundup: Reid leads Carson boys to first-place finish

Carson High’s boys track team edged arch-rival Douglas in a Northern Division 1 meet Saturday at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

The Senators outscored Douglas 89.5-86.5. Spanish Springs was third with 52 and Manogue was fourth with 44. On the girls side, Douglas edged Manogue 74-72. Carson was third at 71.25 and Spanish Springs was fourth at 54.75.

Corey Reid led Carson, winning the 110 high hurdles (14.9), the 200 (22.20) and high jump (6-5) and was second in the long jump (20-11). Ian Van Rensselaer won the 400 (53.20) and the 3200 (11:30.59). Asa Carter won the triple jump (42-6) and took second in the 400 (53.70). Ian Schulz won the shot (47-9 3/4) and the discus (160-4). The latter mark was a PR. Chris Miranda had a second in the shot (45-9) and a third in the discus (135-4). The 3200 relay squad of Van Rensselaer, Adam Flaten, Michael Leiken and Wyatt Cartier won in 9:03.30.

Douglas’ boys got wins from Austin Croxall (1600, 4:50.0), Sam Melhus (300 hurdles, 44.60), 1600 relay squad (3:41.09), Ian Isherwood (pole vault, 14-0) and Connor Lyons (long jump, 21-5).

On the girls side, Madison Preston and Athena Favero each won two events for Carson.

Preston won the long jump (16-10) and triple jump (36-8 1/2) and took second in the 200 (26.80). Favero won the 100 hurdles (18.0) and the 300 hurdles (48.0). Eveline Delgado won the 3200 (12:59.0) and was second in the 400 (1:06.60). CHS won the 800 and 3200 relays.

For Douglas, Lindsey Adams won the 800 (2:24.72) and the 1600 (5:17.20). Savannah Haase (34-4 1/2) won the shot, Morgan Weston won the discus (125-11) and Alexis Von Schottenstein took the high jump (4-6).

Dayton fares well at Fernley

FERNLEY — Zach Hawley enjoyed a big day in the weight events at the 1A meet in Fernley.

Hawley threw 57-6 in the shot and 159-2 in the discus to win both events. Both marks were PRs.

Kaylee Turner won the shot with a throw of 36-10 and was second in the discus at 119-9. She scratched three times with throws more than 130 feet.

Benji Ply won the pole vault (13-0) and the 110 high hurdles. Jesus Castaneda was second in the shot at 46-8 and had a top-five in the discus at 131-7. Jon Ply was second in the 110 hurdles and third in the pole vault (11-6).

The quartet of Dallon Mendoza, Toby Tapley, Wes Wright and Skyler Berntson won the 400 relay and tied for first in the 800 relay. The group of Jessie Ingham, Sydney Strickler and Ashley and Rebecca Mason won the 400 and 800 relays.

WNC sweeps series

RANGELY, Colo. —It only took one weekend for the Western Nevada College softball team to forget about a tough series against nationally ranked Salt Lake Community College and build some momentum for the rest of the Scenic West Athletic Conference softball season.

The Wildcats completed a four-game sweep of Colorado Northwestern on Saturday, winning 8-3 and 10-1.

The wins elevated the Wildcats to fourth place in the SWAC with a 5-6 record.

“This is a good momentum boost, confidence-builder for us,” WNC coach Leah Wentworth said. “We were able to settle in at the plate and string some hits together, which is something we’ve been struggling with a little bit.

“The level of play in our conference continues to push us and enables us to grow and get stronger as well. If we continue to progress at this rate, we are going to have a really strong finish.”

Starting pitching, the consistent plate appearances of freshman Melanie Mecham and power hitting carried the Wildcats to the two wins on Saturday. Mecham went 6 for 9 with six RBI in the two games.

Sophomore Nicole Lesniak picked up where she left off in relief in game two Friday by throwing a six-hitter Saturday. Lesniak was able to work around the four errors committed behind her.

“She had a good outing. Even though the defense made some errors behind her, we were able to back them up with some outs right afterwards and get ourselves out of it,” Wentworth said.

Pamela Sakuma and Briauna Carter supported Lesniak with two-run and solo homers, respectively. Sakuma’s was her first of the season.

Sakuma’s homer capped a five-run first inning.

Mecham continued her sold weekend at the plate, going 2 for 4 with three RBI. In addition, Samantha Bell and Lauren Lesniak contributed two hits, while Gabriella Canibeyaz and Bailey Henderson each delivered a hit.

WNC used a similar recipe for success in game two. Ex-Carson pitcher Kaitlyn Jimmy went the distance, surrendering five hits while striking out five.

“She was a good complement to Nicole because Nicole had them off balance and unable to adjust to her outside curve and then Kaitlyn Jimmy comes in and she has a good screwball, riseball and a little more velocity and a good change-up,” Wentworth said. “Just the difference between the two of them just made it really hard for the hitters to settle in. She was doing a good job working ahead in counts and living on the corners.”

Mecham delivered four more hits and knocked in three runs.

Like they did in the opener, the Wildcats delivered a pair of home runs. Lauren Lesniak and Kacie Freudenberger slammed solo homers, while Wildcat leadoff hitter Makaylee Jaussi went 2 for 5. Lauren Lesniak finished 3 for 4 and Henderson scored three runs. Henderson, Canibeyaz, Dakota Robinson and Katilyn Covione produced a hit.

WNC (10-11 overall) will play host to Snow College in a four-game series beginning Friday at Edmonds Sports Complex.

PREP SOFTBALL

Carson splits at tourney

SACRAMENTO — Carson High snapped a six-game losing streak with a 17-2 consolation win at the annual Victory Preseason TOC at the Sacramento Softball Complex.

Carson opened the day with a 5-2 loss to Colfax, as seven errors cost the Senators a chance to win.

Carson is 2-6 on the season heading into Thursday’s road game at Bishop Manogue.

Bailey Allen went 5-for-5 in the win over Foothill, while Terryn Earle, Makenzie Tucker, Camiell Simpson and Sarah Runge all had two hits apiece.

“We played well and hit the ball well,” coach Shane Qulling said.

Makenzie Tucker went the distance, allowing just four hits in the mercy rule win.

In the loss to Colfax, CHS was down 2-0 in the fourth when three errors enabled Colfax to score three unearned runs. Allen and Earle led the Senators with two hits apiece, while Lauren Lembug and Gabi Winder had a hit each.

“Lauren pitched well; only gave up three hits,” Quilling said. “It was a winnable game, but you can’t make seven errors and expect to win.”

PREP BASEBALL

Spring Creek sweeps Dayton

DAYTON — Spring Creek swept Saturday’s Division 1A doubleheader from Dayton, 9-5 and 9-3. The Dust Devils fell to 0-3.

“We couldn’t stay away from the big inning in either game,” DHS coach Mike Burrows said. “We need to continue to grow and eliminate mistakes that lose ballgames.”

In the opener, Spring Creek snapped a 2-all tie with seven in the fourth, four of which were unearned. In the second game, Spring Creek snapped a scoreless tie with five in the second.

Jesse Schmidt and Mike Selmi each went 2-for-4 with Schmidt driving in two runs. D.J. Baker had a hit and two RBI.

Selmi’s two run double cut the lead in the second game to 5-3, but that’s as close as Dayton would get. Selmi and Jaret Reed each had a hit.

COLLEGE

Wolf Pack takes MW lead

RENO – Nevada received a dominant pitching effort to win on just three hits, defeating New Mexico by a 3-1 margin Saturday afternoon at Peccole Park.

The 28th-ranked Wolf Pack took sole possession of the conference lead in front of 1,377 fans while improving its record to 14-4 overall and 6-2 in the Mountain West.

Senior RHP Jason Deitrich shined on the mound for a third straight start while helping Nevada pull level in the series. The 6-foot-6 hurler allowed one run, five hits and one walk in 6.1 innings to improve to 3-1.

Senior Austin Byler hit a lead-off home run in the first inning and drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth to lead Nevada to a victory despite its lowest hit-total of the season. The Lobos fall to 11-5 overall and 5-3 in the MW.

Ex-CHS pitcher Adam Whitt entered the game in the top of the ninth and slammed the door shut with a strikeout and two groundouts. The Carson City native tallied his eighth save of the season and the 16th of his career, improving to third in program history in career saves. Whitt hasn’t allowed a run in his past eight appearances to lower his team-best ERA to 0.66.

Nevada sweeps in tourney

RENO – Strong pitching performances from sophomore McKenna Isenberg and freshman Chase Redington lifted the Nevada softball team to two wins, 6-2 over Portland State and 5-4 over St. Mary’s, on Saturday at the Wolf Pack Classic.

Isenberg (3-8) tallied her second-consecutive complete game while Redington (4-6) went the distance for the fourth time this season for the Pack (8-18, 0-0 MW). Nevada has now won four straight and four of its last six games at Hixson Park.

After the Vikings pushed two runs across in the top of the first, Nevada responded with a big two-out rally in the home half of the second. After back-to-back singles from freshman Alyssa Mendez and junior Amanda Weis, senior Molly McWilliams moved both runners into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, sophomore Raquel Martinez stepped to the plate and the Reno native delivered with a base hit up the middle that tied the game at 2-2.

Senior Karley Hopkins then came to the dish and hit a double to the gap that scored Martinez from first and give the Pack its first lead of the game, 3-2. Hopkins moved to third on a single from junior Danielle Wiltz who, along with Hopkins, scored on a single through the right side from junior Jasmine Jenkins that made it 5-2 Nevada.

In Nevada’s first game of the day, the Pack jumped on the Gaels early in the bottom of the first. With one out, Wiltz singled through the right side and went from first base to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jenkins. With junior Megan Sweet at the plate, Wiltz scored on a wild pitch to give Nevada a 1-0 lead. Sweet and Mendez followed with back-to-back singles before Weis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. On a 1-0 count,

McWilliams blasted a double off the wall in right field that scored two and extended the Nevada lead to 3-0.
