Community spotlight: Carson City’s Stock rises to national title

Richard Stock of Carson City won the national NASTAR championship in Aspen, Colo., late last week.

Stock, who skis out of Squaw Valley, won the 14-16 Silver Division title in his first national championship appearance.

He had times of 26.90 and 28.98 for a 27.940. That was good enough to beat out Jon Hampton from Maine, who had an average of 28.595.

Earlier in the week, Stock collided with another competitor and broke his helmet and missed the rest of Wednesday’s practice session.

Stock was strictly a snowboarder until this past season when he joined the Carson High ski team.

Another Carson resident, Noah Giron, was seventh in the 14-15 Gold Division group. He averaged 26.68.

Tarkanian hoop clinic

Danny Tarkanian, son of the late basketball coaching great Jerry Tarkanian, is bringing his Tarkanian Basketball Academy to Carson High’s Morse Burley Gym Saturday at 11:30 a.m. for a free basketball clinic.

The clinic is open to boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 18.

The clinic will consist of speaking to the students about the importance of playing sports and competition, and teaching the fundamentals of the game. Each student will receive a t-shirt.

Patterson wins event

Dennis Patterson shot a net 70 to win Carson Valley Golf Club’s stroke play event on March 22.

Patterson won by two shots over Charles Serafine and Glen Watson in A flight.

G.J. Paulson won B flight with a 65, three shots better than Augie Martinez and Richard Torok. Gary Carsten won C flight with a 64, four shots better than Matt Budjako and six better than Chuck Householder. John Carey won D flight with a 68, four shots better than Bill Centers and six better than Paul Finan.

Green and Lewis triumph

Jim Green and John Lewis shot a net 53 to win Empire Ranch’s Senior Men’s Club scramble event on March 18. The duo won the A flight via tiebreaker over Tony Barbara and Terry Thomas.

Albert Gionnotti and Greg Bentley shot a 45 to win B flight. Henry Teague and Marshall McCurdy were second with a 51.

Cabela’s hosting event

Cabela’s is celebrating the beginning of spring by hosting Spring Outdoor Days II on March 28-29.

There will be seminars on variety of hunting, sporting dogs, fishing topics and cooking demonstrations. The Gold Panners Association and the Reno Prospecting and Detecting Club will teach people how to pan for gold or how to use a metal detector. Kids can also learn how to safely shoot an air rifle. Reps from National Rifle Association, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Wild Sheep Foundation will be on hand to answer questions about their organations.
