One Carson City boy was honored by the AAA Nevada for being the Honorable Mention Safety Patroller of the Year Thursday morning.

Kyle Navarro, a seventh grader at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School, was recognized by the organization for his exemplary leadership with the program. The AAA Safety Patrol safety program is designed to help reduce pedestrian accidents as children cross streets to and from school.

“I thought it would be a fun way to get along with people and get along with the community,” Navarro said.

For the award, Navarro submitted an essay about what leadership qualities he gained from joining the Safety Patrol in August.

“Safety Patrol has greatly developed my leadership skills,” Navarro wrote in his winning essay. “I use these skills everywhere, at Boy Scouts, at school, and even in sports... Safety Patrol has made me a better leader and has developed many good qualities that will be beneficial for me in life.”

Navarro was recognized for his achievement at the St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church Thursday morning. Two representatives from AAA Nevada presented Navarro with a plaque and a check for $1,500 for the school.

“It feels great actually to be selected, it is a nice honor to have,” Navarro said. “It surprised me that I got it with all the safety patrollers in the Carson City/Lake Tahoe area.”
