Les Miserables. Prisoners of the city jail were working on the street in front of the Magnolia. They are two refractory prisoners that are on bread and water. They are in a cell nursing their contumacy to keep it warm. They swear by the great hokum-snorkey that they won’t work.

Chinese burial ground. Some dirty blackguard has defaced a number of the headboards by scrawling with a brush filthy names. It is a felony. It is hoped that the perpetrator will be discovered and made to serve a merited term in the State Prison. (Times-Review)

Sutro. There is a boom at Sutro. Plans are outlined for starting restaurants, saloons and grocery stores within the attractive little village. There is a possibility that large ore reduction plants may be installed. (Chronicle)

Leisure Hour Club. Mrs. Chester Cochran was elected president of the Leisure Hour club. Those named to serve with her — J. S. Compton, vice president; Mrs. Alan Bible, recording secretary ... Mrs. Lucy Crowell, building chairman, and Miss Clara Crisler, program chairman.

50 Years Ago

Gracious dinner. An elderly, distinguished man had dinner at the Mint. He dined well and complimented the waitress and sent his compliments to the chef. The owner Bill Crow was pleased with the recognition of merits. The only catch was that the distinguished man disappeared — without paying his bill.

15 Years Ago

1990 time capsule. The time capsule was waterlogged as it was wedged open with a hammer and chisel. When the box was tipped over, murky brown water came from inside. The entries, all 93, were unreadable. Members of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce had the foresight to make copies of the entries. (Continued on Wednesday.)
