Six Carson High seniors will play for the last time at Morse Burley Gymnasium Tuesday in the annual Local Sports Programming All-Star basketball games.
The girls game tips at 6 p.m. and the boys follows at 7:30 p.m.
Dilyn Rooker, Cameron Price and Kyle Steele will play for the White squad which is being coached by Carson’s Carlos Mendeguia. The White squad will also have players from Reed, McQueen, Galena, North Valleys, Spanish Springs and Whittell.
Elko’s Chris Klekas coaches the Blue squad, and his roster includes Douglas grads Trey Mauer and Sam Broersma.
Michelle Perry, Maddie Preston and Kayla Aikins will play for the Blue squad which is being coached by Lowry’s Chelsea Cabatbat.
Outgoing Manogue coach Craig Holt coaches the White squad. His roster includes Douglas stars Corynne Millett and Leona Mortimer.
BASEBALL
Blue Jays lose, 6-2
RENO — The Sun Devils scored five first-inning runs off Bryce Moyle and went on to record a 6-2 win over the Carson Blue Jays Thursday at Wooster High School in the opening round of the Reno Knight Memorial Day Tournament.
Carson plays tonight at 5 at Ron McNutt Field against the McQuen Royals.
Two errors led to four unearnd runs in the game.
Gehrig Parks and Logan Weeks scattered seven hits. Carson scored all of its runs in the seventh inning when Jace Keema doubled home two runs.
Cody Azevedo led Carson with two hits, while John Holton, Joe Nelson, Keema, Moyle and Abel Carter had a hit apiece.
Former Carson standouts Brandon Allen and Josiah Pongasi played for the Sun Devils. Pongasi had two hits and two runs scored, while Allen had a hit and RBI. Dakota Tompkins homered off Moyle in the opening inning.
Omaha slips past Reno
OMAHA – A five-run fourth inning for the Omaha Storm Chasers led to a 9-6 win over the visiting Reno Aces Thursday night at Werner Park.
Nick Evans’ RBI single gave the Aces (18-22) a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. It scored Danny Dorn who tripled with one out in the opening frame.
Aces starter Justin Marks made quick work of the Storm Chasers (19-22) in the first three innings – he faced one over the minimum and recorded three strikeouts in the first three frames.
The fourth wasn’t as kind to the left-hander. Armed with a 2-0 lead, the bottom of the fourth began with Marks issuing a free pass to Raymond Fuentes. Cheslor Cuthbert singled to left and Brett Eibner walked to load the bases with no outs.
Omaha left-fielder Jose Martinez laced a single to left, scoring Fuentes and Cuthbert to even the game at 2-2. Marks retired Orlando Calixte on a fly out to center for the second out of the inning. That’s when Matt Fields gave the Storm Chasers the lead for good with a three-run home run to left-center. The home run chased Marks who was charged with five runs in 3 2/3 innings.
The Aces cut the deficit to 5-4 in the top of the fifth when Nick Evans blasted a two-run homer after Peter O’Brien singled through the left side. Evans has 17 RBI in his last seven games, and 24 in the month of May.
Cuthbert gave the Storm Chasers and insurance run when he knocked a base hit to right in the bottom half of the fifth.
The Aces put runners on second and third with one out in the sixth but couldn’t score. A double play wiped out another baserunner in the seventh.
Omaha extended its lead to 9-4 with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Reno’s Jarrod Saltalamacchia launched a two-run homer to cut the lead to 9-6 in the top of the eighth.
Michael Mariot retired Evans, O’Brien and Jamie Romak in order in the ninth to earn his first save of the season for Omaha.
