President and party inspect Boulder Dam before ceremonies

Boulder Dam, Sept. 30 — (LP) — President and Mrs. Roosevelt, Secretary of the Interior Ickes and Senator Key Pittman spent an hour inspecting the dam before the time for the beginning of the president’s address.

“Marvelous” declared the president as he stood atop the huge structure.

Friends of the president are jubilant over the reception accorded the president in the middle west, pointing out that they now believe the middle west will support the president for re-election.

Boulder City, Sept. 30 — (LP) — President Roosevelt today dedicated the gigantic Boulder Dam to serve the nation for the president and the future in exercises here attended by thousands.

With hundreds of federal, state and municipal officials from Nevada and neighboring states in attendance the president inspected the huge barrier across the Colorado river during the morning.

Then followed at 11 a.m. the dedication exercises with Mr. Roosevelt’s remarks being broadcast over a nationwide hookup of radio stations. The exercises took place on the Nevada side of the dam.

Harold L. Ickes, secretary of interior and under whose direction the dam was brought to a completion, was master of ceremonies. He introduced Sen. Key Pittman, D., Nev., who in turn introduced the president.

Gov. Richard Kirman of Nevada was host to the visiting dignitaries.

Those witnessing the spectacle were at the top of Black canyon and along the rim of the dam itself.

While the dedicatory rites were in progress, the Boulder City post office placed on sale the new Boulder Dam commemorative postage stamp of 3-cent denomination. The stamps will go on sale elsewhere in the state Tuesday.

The president’s special train arrived here shortly after 3 a.m. and was expected to leave about 4 p.m. for California and San Diego where he will visit the exposition and also inspect the fleet in review. He sails for a two-week fishing trip from Los Angeles.

Besides Gov. Kirman and Sen. Pittman, Nevada officials present included: Sen. Pat McCarran, Congressman J.G. Scrugham, J.L. Vandiver, PWA director, Frank Upman, SERA director, State Highway Engineer Robert Allen, PWA Counsel J.E. Evans, Collector of Internal Revenue, Robert Douglas, State FHA Director Friedhoff, John A. Fulton, secretary of the state planning board and NEC Director Frank Ingram.
