Carson River watershed tour June 9 & 10

The two-day Carson River Watershed Tour is set for June 9 and 10, according to the Carson River Water Subconservancy based in Carson City.

The tour covers the upper watershed basically southwest of Carson City on the first day and the lower watershed to the northeast of the Nevada capital on the second day. Cost is $140 per person for the two-day event, which includes lunch each day.

“The Carson Water Subconservancy District’s ‘Get on the Bus’ tour of the Carson River Watershed offers participants a survey course on integrated watershed management from the headwaters to the terminus,” said Brenda Hunt. subconservancy watershed coordinator.

“Resource professionals and general citizens alike will benefit from this two-day introduction to the Carson River watershed,” she said, adding experts making presentations manage various aspects of the region’s critical water resources. She said only 10 spots were left to be booked on the tour as of Tuesday.

The first day’s events include site visits in Hope Valley near the river and at the South Tahoe Public Utility District, Dangberg Ranch and the River Fork Ranch in Douglas County. Among presenters that day will be Steve Lewis of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension.

Also that first day Juan Guzman, retired Carson City Open Space manager, will present on the Carson Valley Trails Association, and those touring will hear from Robb Fellows and Shyla Lemons of Carson City Public Works Department during a stop at Clear Creek and Baily Pond.

The second day. Ann Bollinger, current Carson City Open Space manager, will speak and there will be a site visit at the Ambrose Natural Area. It will be followed by site visits at Ft. Churchill State Historic Park, the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge, and Lahontan Dam to learn about the Newlands Project.
