Carson’s Ortiz-Osty shoots for top-10 state finish

The NIAA State Cross-Country Championships heads one of the busiest sports days in northern Nevada.

The top runners throughout the Silver State will descend on Rancho San Rafael Park today at 9 a.m.

Individually, Carson High sophomore Josefina Ortiz-Osty will be looking to crack the top-10 in her first-ever state appearance. In Division 1A Dayton is represented by Brady Huesser, who was seventh last week, and Hunter Hatch who was 15th.

Douglas High qualified both its boys and girls squads as did Sierra Lutheran.

The Falcons’ duo of Elaina and Jared Marchegger will be looking to duplicate their first-place regional finishes. The Tigers are led by Megan Ruffo, who’s coming off a fourth-place finish. The DHS boys are led by John Munyan and Kaleb Morris, who placed third and eighth, resspectively last week

• Also today is the regional volleyball championship with Carson trading spikes with Manogue at 4 p.m. at Bishop Manogue. The Miners were the regular-season Sierra League champions, and their only loss came at the hands of Carson nearly two weeks ago.

Carson, led by the hitting of Jaycie Roberts and Juliana Anderson, and the blocking of Maddie Jergesen, is coming off a three-set win over arch-rival Douglas on Thursday. Manogue eliminated Damonte Ranch in four games.

The winner of today’s game advances to the state tournament in Las Vegas next weekend.

• Both of Carson’s soccer teams are in semifinal action today at North Valleys.

The CHS boys, coming off a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Spanish Springs, play North Valleys at 2 p.m. Carson blanked the Panthers, 5-0, during the regular season.

Carson’s girls, fresh off a 3-0 win over McQueen, face arch-rival Douglas today at 4 p.m.

The girls and boys finals are set for 4 and 6 p.m., respectively, Monday at Carson High. The weather report isn’t favorable for Monday. The forecast calls for a 60 percent chance of rain and/or snow.

The state playoffs are scheduled for Friday and Saturday at North Valleys.
