150 Years Ago

Murdered by Indians. Mr. Cox of Silver City was killed by Indians when he and his family were moving in a wagon to Boise City. They were fired on and Mr. Cox instantly killed. His wife drove rapidly and escaped.

130 Years Ago

Died — In Dayton on Nov. 8, the infant daughter of George Buckland. Services conducted by Rev. G. R. Davis of St. Peters in Carson. In attendance were friends from Dayton, Sutro and Gold Hill.

110 Years Ago

Putting on the roof. The new schoolhouse (corner of King and Division) is moving along at a rapid rate. The big building has assumed a new form, the roof and the shingles are at work, and the tower is about finished. The building seems to be the finest structure in the state.

70 Years Ago

Jack Butti. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Mose Butti was injured when his truck skidded on a wet spot going over the bank between Carson and Lake Tahoe. He fractured his back. Butti received an honorable discharge from the army about two weeks ago having served in the Aleutians.

50 Years Ago

Photo caption. Heavy equipment from the L.A. Dunson Company firm moves against the rear section of the Arlington Hotel. The building which was condemned by the city was ordered razed before Jan. 1.

20 Years Ago

Fossil unearthed. Fred Williamson found a fossil south of Yerington. Hazel Wald, a Virginia City paleontologist, said the fossil was part of a gomphothere, a creature similar to the modern elephant, the size of a hippopotamus that had four tusks.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
