The Cracker Box is growing — at least in the kitchen. The longtime Carson City restaurant is expanding for the second time in its 35-year history. The exterior portion of the expansion has been completed for a few months, but the restaurant must shut down to complete the inside portion.

While most customers won’t actually see the new addition, the expanded kitchen area is going to have a huge impact on the business.

“We are significantly increasing our storage, refrigeration and prep space,” said owner Jerry Massad. “It’s going to be great for the people who work in the back kitchen after working in such a small space for so many years. It’s amazing what they have been able to do,” adding, “the customers will also benefit as the additional space will allow us to add new items to our menu in the future.”

The Cracker Box is a Carson City institution. The diner has topped many “Best of” lists. Locals regularly vote it the “Best Breakfast in Carson City,” and Trip Advisor users have honored the diner three years running with a Certificate of Excellence Award. AAA’s VIA magazine has named it the Best Breakfast in the West.

The Cracker Box, at 402 E. William St., will reopen at 6 a.m. Nov. 27.
