This year’s crowd of Greenwave fans have been awaiting the crowning of the 2015 king and queen at midfield tonight as Homecoming activities begin to wind down for Churchill County High School.
Traditionally, the candidates include three couples from the senior class and attendants, one each from the freshmen, sophomore and junior classes.
Seniors vying for this year’s tiara include Kayla Biggs, Nichole Mariezcurrena and Madison Perazzo.
Biggs said homecoming to her means bringing classes together. Biggs, an active volunteer in the community, also plays soccer and competes in archery for the club team. She plans on to study radiology once she graduates.
Student Body President Mariezcurrena plans to attend Truckee Meadow Community College next fall. She has also been a member of Student Council for four years.
“Homecoming means us coming together, dressing up and participating in activities,” she said. “It gives them a chance to show their support for our school.”
Perazzo, a varsity soccer and basketball player, said Homecoming allows students and the community to show school spirit with fun activities throughout the week. She plans to attend Brigham Young University for veterinary science.
The senior boys seeking the lofty king’s crown are Jaylen Cordes, Kyle Larsen and Ramiro Sanchez.
Cordes hopes to pursue a nursing degree at a college in the West. The multi-talented athlete said his favorite thing about Homecoming is how everyone in the school gets involved.
Larsen, a member of the National Honor Society and Block F, said he plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno to study wildlife biology.
“Homecoming is a time I get to spend with friends and make memories,” he said. “It also gives me the privilege to play in the game on Friday night.”
Sanchez volunteers in the community and plans to attend UNR. He feels Homecoming is a time to be with friends and make memories.
The juniors are Alexis Duenas and Jack Swisher. Duenas, a Student Council member and the Junior Class treasurer, is passionate when it comes to singing and studying photography. Swisher has wrestled and played baseball for the Greenwave, placing third in state wrestling this year.
Faith Cornmesser and Dawson Frost are the sophomore royalty candidates. Cornmesser has played on a variety of Greenwave sports teams including softball, basketball and volleyball. Frost, the Sophomore Class president, runs cross country and track and field and strives to rank top in his class.
Lesley Duenas and Hayden Strasdin are experiencing homecoming first-hand this year. Duenas, a cheerleader for the Greenwave, is heavily involved in Student Council, Pep Club and STOP club. Strasdin, an avid athlete, has been seen playing football, basketball and baseball.
