100 Years Ago

The night of the earthquake about a dozen men and one woman employed at the salt marsh near salt wells had a strange experience following the heavy shock. There was a strong odor of sulfuric gas, evidently emanating from the hot springs nearby. It was so strong in the house that people were forced to seek fresh air in the open.

The shock seems to have been general all over the state, extending from Salt Lake to Los Angeles. Winnemucca appears to have been the center of the disturbance. Fully half the brick chimneys in town were either thrown down or damaged requiring repair. On the Uniacke Ranche the ground sank several feet in places and the water came up.

75 Years Ago

Young people of Fallon this year will be offered a bang-up Hallowe’en party including movies, costume contests and refreshments by the Lions’ Club, assisted officially by the city and by local merchants. If response is good, this will become an annual affair.

More than 75 varieties of cacti and succulent plants, native of South Africa and other tropical countries make up the collection of Mrs. G. T. Woodward of Allen Street in Fallon. She specializes in the small plants that do not grow too large, and so has none of the native species of Nevada. Among the most interesting are the mimicry plants. These little cacti are choice food for ostriches, so except for their flowering season, they mimic the lava rock of South Africa and are hard to find. The bishops crown is one of these and the living rock which looks and feels like a rock is another. The elkhorn is a variety that grows two stems is a native of Ireland.

50 Years Ago

More of Fallon’s new car dealers will be unveiling their 1966 models this week with Fallon Garage, Inc. unveiling the Caprice and Chevelle models. Stewart Pontiac will display three of their Pontiac small car series, the 4-door Catalina, the 2-door sports coupe. Women bowlers whose husbands have deserted them to go on a weekend of hunting have a special weekend planned for them at Oasis Lanes October 9-10. On Saturday at 7:30 p.m., there will be a fashion show. After the fashion show, the women partners will bowl and a smorgasbord will be served.
