The Emmet Guard had its regular picnic in Treadway’s field on Sunday. It was accompanied by a brass band and Dennis McCarthy of the Virginia Evening Chronicle. Its principal achievement was getting beaten in target shooting by its band master and guide marker.

130 years ago

(Demented politicians; continued from Tuesday). They get some short-sided party to put up the money and launch the new enterprise and as the columns of the fledgling journal begin to teem with puerile abuse of the Appeal, they rub their hands, pat the editor on the back and tell him to keep up his lick.

100 years ago

The City Council met in regular session with Mayor Jersey MacDonald presiding. Mr. Campbell of the Truckee General Electric Company of Reno was present and stated his company was perfectly willing to move the telephone poles back into the curb where they belong as long as the council gives them notice to proceed.

70 years ago

Lt. and Mrs. Donald Dondero have returned to Carson City awaiting discharge. He served in the Atlantic on the carrier Ranger for a year and in the Pacific on the carrier Bunker Hill for 10 months. The Bunker Hill was later hit by a Japanese suicide plane and severely damaged.

50 years ago

Meet the senators (photo caption). Harry “Butch” Cattanach, 160 pound end and a Senior at Carson High school did yeoman service in Friday night’s game against White Pine which the Senators won 34-0.

30 years ago

The Eye Surgery Center of Nevada opened its doors Thursday with the regular hoopla that accompanies a grand opening. But ophthalmologists Dr. William Spector and Dr. Michael Fischer celebrated in their own style.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
