Prep roundup: Carson girls soccer keeps hold onto second place

RENO — Lindy Lehman scored on a cross from Nahim Gutierrez in the opening minutes of the second half to break a scoreless tie and give Carson a 1-0 win over Damonte Ranch in a Sierra League girls soccer match Tuesday night.

The win gives the second-place Senators a 10-2 record with four games left to play. The Senators have already clinched a playoff berth, and are now looking for a first-round home game.

“We had quite a few opportunities, especially in the second half,” CHS coach Greg Lehman said. “Their goalie made some great saves. Damonte was really hustling tonight.”

Carson visits Wooster Saturday at 11 a.m.

Carson girls fail to move on

RENO — Carson freshman Jill Beglin missed by five shots of qualifying for next week’s Division I state tournament.

Beglin, who opened the Division I regionals with an 87 at Hidden Valley, shot 92 Tuesday at Sommersett to finish in 12th place with a 36-hole total of 179. Camry Aten was 33rd with a 223 and Angelika Morrison was 44th with a 271.

McQueen won the event with a 698 and Spanish Springs was second with a 730.

The only local qualifier was Douglas’ Lauren Hickam, who shot 173 and finished eighth overall.

“I thought Jill would have to shoot in the 80s again today,” CHS coach Wade Greenlee said.

“Her score was still very impressive. She will have plenty of opportunities to play at state. It was a successful season, and I’m proud of my players.”

TENNIS

2 CHS netters alive

RENO — Shaylin Segura and Anya Woodbury both won first-round matches at the NIAA Division I tennis tournament Tuesday.

The news wasn’t so good for the other CHS entrants. Emma Breeding lost in straight sets, while the doubles tandems of Elise Brady and Heather LaMotte lost 1-6, 2-6, Mikaela Asby and Nancy Henrikson lost 2-6 and 4-6, and Emily McCaskill and Amanda Schulz lost 1-6 and 3-6.

Segura won a tough three-setter, 2-6, 6-1 and 6-4, while Woodbury won 6-0 and 6-1.

Segura and Woodbury return to action Thursday at 9 a.m.

The boys tournament gets under way today.

VOLLEYBALL

VC wins in four

Virginia City (14-3, 9-2) won at Sierra Lutheran 25-18, 25-13, 17-25, 27-25. Rachel Renaud had four kills, Kelsi Sequeira had seven aces, four kills and nine assists, Kim Tlapa had four aces and 10 digs, Bethany Fuller had four aces and five kills,

Chelsea Nevin had one block, seven aces and seven kills, Jordan Seddon had three aces, three kills and one block and Kaitlin Hames added two aces, four kills, one block and four digs for the Muckers.

Sierra Lutheran won the JV match, 2-0.
