A man suspected in a Gardnerville Ranchos shooting is accused of killing his mother.

Michelle Kozlowski, 50, was identified as the victim in a shooting that occurred in the 1200 block of Manhattan Way early Tuesday morning.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a report of domestic violence with shots fired at about 1:24 a.m.

When they arrived they found Kozlowski dead in the street.

Sheriff’s Spokesman Sgt. Pat Brooks said deputies confronted Jarek Kozlowski, 27, who fired at them. Deputies returned fire, hitting Jarek. He ran from the home over the back fence, but was found a short time later and taken for medical treatment.

No deputies were injured in the incident.

Brooks said the shooting occurred during a fight when Jarek allegedly threatened his mother with a handgun.

His younger brother tried to calm Jarek down, having him step outside. While outside the two brothers became involved in a struggle, and Jarek allegedly grabbed the gun and aimed it at his brother, who ran away from the home.

Michelle Kozlowski then confronted Jarek, which was when she was shot.

Two dogs were taken from the scene by Douglas County Animal Control.

A neighbor said law enforcement had been to the address before.

Carson City will conduct the investigation into the exchange of gunfire between deputies and the suspect, while Douglas County will investigate the woman’s death.

Neighbors who called 911 when they heard the shots were turning in witness statements Tuesday morning.

This is the third domestic violence related shooting this year.

Six deputies involved in a shooting on Monument Peak earlier this year have been cleared for duty.
