Prep roundup: Carson boys clinch 2nd with big win

Carson High’s boys soccer team wrapped up second place in the Sierra League and a first-round home game in the upcoming regional playoffs by virtue of its easy 8-1 win over Bishop Manogue Saturday afternoon at the Jim Frank Track & Field Complex.

The win gives Carson, 11-3-1 on the season, 34 points. Galena entered the day with 28 points, and could ultimately get to 34 points if it wins its final two games and Carson loses at Douglas on Wednesday. However, Carson has the tiebreaker over the Grizzlies by virtue of its win and tie against GHS.

“It’s very important because we have our fans,” said Guillermo Hernandez, who had his first hat trick of the season. “I feel we may see Spanish Springs in the first round. I think they are the toughest team on the other side in my opinion.”

And, coach Mike Alvarez had some good news on the injury front. Leading scorer Rogelio Herrera not only played Saturday, but he had two goals. Midfielder Alex Gonzalez (sore back) has been cleared to play, and should see some action on Wednesday against Douglas.

“Rogelio is our playmaker,” Alvarez said. “He played well today. I ended up playing him longer than I should have.

“Coming into today’s game, I wasn’t expecting the score to be as high as it was because it was a relaxed atmosphere.”

This one was over in the first 15 minutes when Carson scored three goals on its first four shot attempts.

Oscar Ventura, who scored twice, tallied his first goal in the second minute. Jaime Saldana rattled one that hit the top of the crossbar and bounced in to make it 2-0 in the 14th minute, and Herrera scored a minute later for a 3-0 lead.

It was more of the same in the second half.

Hernandez scored the first of his three goals in the 46th minute, Ventura scored his second goal in the 52nd minute, and then it was Herrera again in the 57th minute. Hernandez completed his hat trick with goals in the 58th and 66th minute, respectively, to make it 8-0. Manogue scored its only goal in the 70th minute.

Muckers sweep Pyramid

Virginia City improved to 11-3 in conference play with a 25-4, 25-3 and 25-17 road win over Pyramid Lake Saturday afternoon.

The win was a good tune-up for Tuesday’s battle against Smith Valley at 5 p.m.

Bethany Fuller and Chelsea Nevin led the hitters with nine and seven kills, respectively. Kelsi Sequeira led in serving with nine aces while Fuller added seven. Shaylynn Call had six digs while Sequeira added 16 assists. Jordan Seddon added five kills.

The JV squad won 2-0.

Truckee downs Dayton

DAYTON — The Wolverines scored four goals in each half to easily defeat the Dust Devils 8-1.
