The Rotary Club of Fallon is sponsoring the Area 10 Foundation District 5190 dinner on Friday, Nov. 13.
Area 10 Rotary Clubs include Fallon, Fernley, Smith Valley, Tonopah and Yerington. The event will be held at the Fallon Convention Center, 100 Campus Way, Fallon. The social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. with and open bar. A dinner will be catered by The Quarterback Club at 7 p.m. Zip Upham will entertain attendees throughout the evening as the Master of Ceremonies.
This year’s theme is “City Slickers III — Curley’s Dinner Party.” A prize for the best western get-up will be awarded. There will be a cooking “shootout” of the Area 10 clubs, to determine which club makes the BEST Dutch-oven dessert. The Golden Cobbler Trophy will be awarded to the best dessert winner. There will be a live auction for the best dessert recipe, along with a silent auction for items just in time for the holidays.
The guest speaker will be Jean Irwin, a retired Teacher of the Deaf from Reno. She has taught in grades preschool through 12th grade in a dozen schools. Irwin was an Ambassadorial Scholar in 1989. The Ambassadorial Scholarship she received allowed her to do research into reading and deafness 22 years ago which earned her a Master’s Degree from Nottingham University in England.
Irwin was as a grassroots coordinator for the passage of a legislative bill to make the testing of hearing mandatory before a baby leaves the hospital in Nevada. Nevada moved from 36th to 8th in the nation for children tested at birth for hearing loss in just two years after this bill passed, resulting in the early intervention that is so critical to language development.
Irwin has spoken to over 450 conferences for both Rotarians and teachers of the deaf about what she has learned as an Ambassadorial Scholar.
