Community spotlight: Overmaier quartet wins best ball shamble

The quartet of Carl Overmaier, Don Burke, Don Burke Jr. and Cheryl Burke combined for a net 118 to win Thunder Canyon’s Variable Best Ball Shamble tournament on Sept. 7.

Greg and Becky Martinelli and Bob and Sandi Oglesby were second at 129, while Mike Bennert, Deb Jones and Virginia and Jack Bonar finished in a third-place tie at 130 with Andrew Sels, Shelly Meredith-Brewster, Leland and Karon Sullivan, and T.C. and Carol Boice and Rick and Julie Skow.

• Cindy Hannah shot a net 62 to take the first-day lead at Thunder Canyon’s Ladies Day event.

Ellen Ewing was second at 68 and Joyce Powell was third at 71.

• The quartet of Bill Stanley, Burt Clements, Tom Brennan and Vern Hamilton tied with Jim Muth, John Lukens, Larry Greenman and Robert Oglesby for first place at Thunder Canyon’s men’s tournament on Sept. 4.

The format was variable best ball.

Darius Martinez, Glenn Tsuda, John Shanks and Thomas Ridgway were third at 123.

Masiello quartet wins

at Empire Ranch

John Masiello, Nick Pal, Jim Green and John Lewis shot a net 108 to win Empire Ranch’s Senior Men’s event at Silver Oak last Wednesday.

Finishing second in Flight A were Joe O’Brien, Ray McPartlin, Mike Rogers and Mike Logue at 112, David Knighton, Bob Warzynski, Terry Thomas and Tony Barbaria were third at 117.

Clark Reid, Dan Rogers, Bob Pluth and Marty Martinez won Flight B in a tiebreaker over the quartets of Fred Coons, Rich Torok, Mel Ness and Peter Youngdahl, and Paul Lockwood, Tom Harlow, Joe Gibson and Ray Huntley. All three groups shot 113.

• Empire’s Nine and Dine is back on Sept. 12.

Tee time is 4:30 p.m. The cost is $75 per couple and includes a prime rib dinner and golf. The cut-off time to sign up is Thursday, Sept. 10.

• Empire Ranch’s first Monday Night Football party is set for Sept. 14 when the 49ers and Falcons collide.

The cost is $10, which includes salad bar, beef vegetable soup, terriyaki wings, hot wings, pork ribs, potato salad, cole slaw and dessert.

Menezes wins club

title at Carson Valley

Marc Menezes shot a net 134 over 36 holes to win the Carson Valley Golf Club’s President’s Cup event held over the last two weekends.

Jeff Schreiber was second at 136 and Matt Lindsey was third at 137. Mike Davis was fourth with a 139.

Miller, Duncan team

up for win at Dayton

Jeff Miller and Jeff Duncan fired rounds of 67 best ball and 68 Chapman Scotch for an impressive 9-under par 135 total to win the low gross title in the 24th Annual Dayton Valley Palmer Club Member-Guest tournament.

Bob Frazee and Greg Whitt finished second low gross.

Low net honors went to Don Robertson and Mike Fajman who finished with an 11-under par net total of 133. Second low net went to Greg Newman and Joe Cartlidge and John Cowee and Mike Williams claimed the third low net award.

Frazee and Whitt also won the annual horse race played following the first round. Marco and Austin DiGiacinto and Larry Windsor and Mark Sattler tied for first in the back-nine Par 3 Shootout played as a tournament warm-up on Friday.

Kwon, Kapczynski

tie Silver Oak

Osu Kwon and William Kapczynski tied for Flight 1 honors at Silver Oak Men’s Club Monthly Masters event on Aug. 30.

Both golfers had net 64s. Russell Nichols was third with a 68, while Adam Koehm, Bert Wells, Jim Silsby and Lee Plemel tied for fourth at 770.

John Carey won Flight 2 with a 66 and Shane McInnerny was next at 68. Gary Gamba and Kyle Menath tied for third with 70s. Shawn Akers was fifth with a 71.

• Ray Moore and Tom Rackerby, and James Feeney and Lee Gilmore tied for first place in the Senior Men’s Club 2-man best ball event at Silver Oak. Both teams shot 56s.

There was a four-way tie for third at 58 with the duos of Bruce Kozak and Tim Bloom, Jim Barnett and Robert Vannort, Doug McGilvray and Jim Pursel, and Tony Barbaria and Terry Thomas.
