The Fallon City Council approved at its Tuesday night meeting to award a contract to Intermountain Slurry Seal, Inc., for resurfacing various streets within the city.
City Engineer Jim Souba said the project was designed to provide a guaranteed minimum quantity of 100,000 square yards of slurry seal to various city streets, which represents about 4.25 linear miles of the typical two-lane streets. He said the contract further provides the option to order an additional 35,000 square yards, if the city chooses that option.
Given the favorable bid prices, he said, the staff recommends performing the additional 35,000 square yards of slurry seal work at the added cost of $51,800 for a total project cost of $200,949. Funding in that total amount is available in Regional Transportation Commission funds. Souba said the exact streets to be sealed would be selected after award of the contract.
The project is part of the city’s reoccurring maintenance program for street preservations, Souba noted. He said three bids were received. The lowest and second lowest bids were very close, and both were well below the engineers estimate.
“Intermountain has previously done very successful slurry work for the city,” Souba said, “and the firm has an excellent reputation for providing quality services.”
The council members awarded the contract for $149,149 and approved the option to order up to 35 percent additional quantities as provided under the contract terms for a total cost of up to $200,949.
Councilwomen Kelly Frost asked Souba if residents would be notified of the project before it started. Souba said resents that occupy the streets will be notified of the work in advance.
Souba said resurfacing the streets would take a couple of weeks to complete. He said slurry sealing is best done in the fall with cooler temperatures.
