Smashup. A fine span of horses attached to a fruit wagon became frightened by a dog rushing at them and ran at full speed along Minnesota Street to Washington Street. There is a ditch 12 feet wide and five feet deep with only a single plank crossing for foot passengers. The wagon landed in the ditch, with a quarter turn, half somersault and a complete rollover ... horses plunged and peaches, pears, and grapes were thrown into the water and mud. The wagon was demolished.

Cornerstone. The cornerstone of the public school building in process of erection in Carson City will be laid by the Grand Lodge of F. & A. M. of Nevada on the 19th of September at 1:30 o’clock p.m. Memorials for deposit in the stone should be delivered to E. E. Roberts. Signed, C. N. Noteware, grand secretary.

China Springs escapees. Two boys are accused of beating Vernon Monegan, a Gardnerville man, and stealing his truck after they escaped from a local youth facility.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
