Carson City’s Due Sorella celebrates 10th anniversary

On a sun dappled porch, Julie Grady of Due Sorella, a local home décor store, poured coffee and served scones to guests gathered to discuss the store’s 10th anniversary party from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, featuring food, live music and door prizes.

“We’ll have lemonade, champagne and cupcakes,” Grady said. “I’m giving a free one-hour home decorating consultation and a fabulous gift basket as door prizes, and offering $10 of a purchase of $30 or more to celebrate our new decade in business.”

Due Sorella, 202 N. Curry St., is situated in what Grady said is a Sears and Roebuck kit home delivered via train and horse drawn carriage and built across the street from George Meyer’s hardware store, and next door to a pharmacy in 1904.

The house is stuffed full of antiques, both refurbished in Grady’s eclectic style and in original condition, curios, collectibles and flowers — lots of flowers.

Grady owned Morning Glory Cottage Furnishings in Tahoe Vista prior to moving to Carson City in 2000. She worked at Allie’s Flowers until the property on Curry Street became available in 2006. Since then, Grady has scoured antique markets and shops everywhere she travels to fill the shop with unique, careworn and refurbished treasures that speak to customers like Mishelle Lopey, a customer of Grady’s since the Morning Glory days.

“It’s hard to believe we’ve known each other so long,” Lopey said. “We are kindred spirits and appreciate old, vintage things that are well put together. Her style draws someone like me, and the shop speaks to my soul.”

Lopey said her home contains many items purchased from Grady over the years, and she’s frequently asked if her homey, inviting furnishings are for sale.

“The shop is about living with what you love,” Grady said. “If you enjoy a warm, homespun feel, you’ll enjoy Due Sorella. We refresh, refurbish and re-imagine well-crafted, well-loved furnishings and add some personality to update them.”

To start off her second decade at Due Sorella, Grady will begin offering in-home personal décor consulting, and she will launch a new line of furniture paint from Dixie Belle Paint Company as well as offering classes in furniture refinishing. The first class will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27. The class costs $95 and includes all supplies, paint and a small side table to refinish. More classes will be offered throughout the summer beginning May 19.

Due Sorella is hosting a series of events this spring and into summer, including a book signing on April 30 with Sally Whipple Mosher Mooney, author of “On the Sunny Side of Life – A Collection of Short Stories About Life on an Isolated Cattle Ranch in Eastern Nevada,” a cooking demonstration with Linda Marrone on May 11 and the Vintage Fair, featuring food, music and vendors selling vintage items on June 4.
