Local roundup: Dayton baseball wins, CHS softball falls

DAYTON — Gage Duke hit a two-run single in the fourth to give Dayton a 4-0 lead, and the Dust Devils held on for a 4-3 win over South Tahoe Tuesday afternoon in a Division 1A baseball game.

South Tahoe scored three in the fourth off starter Trevor Burrows, who worked out of bases-loaded jam in the fifth. Burrows went the distance, allowing four hits and striking out seven. He gave up just one earned run.

“Both teams made mistakes defensively, and fortunately we were able to capitalize on them,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “Trevor did a nice job getting out of trouble in the fifth and sixth. We really needed his win. Our kids have stuck to the process of building the program and getting better every day and it’s nice to see it come to fruition. We travel to Lowry for the weekend, and I hope this gives us momentum going in.”

Duke went 2-for-3 and Jesse Schmidt drove in two runs with a single. Zach Woitas and Jacob Nelson each singled.

Spanish Springs

tops Douglas

Douglas fell on the short end of a 5-1 score at home Tuesday afternoon against Northern Division I conference-leading Spanish Springs in Sparks.

Spanish Springs (12-3 overall, 7-0 league) scored twice in the top of the fourth inning to break up a scoreless duel and then added three more runs in the sixth to increase its lead to 5-1.

Douglas (6-10 overall, 2-5 league) scored its lone run in the fourth inning.

Both teams finished with six hits.

Muckers pummel

Smith Valley

VIRGINIA CITY — The Virginia City Muckers improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in Division 4 play with an easy 19-0 win over Smith Valley Tuesday at Miners Park.

Tanner Uken worked the first four innings, striking out six and giving up one hit. Isaiah Yoder struck out one in the fifth, the final inning of the mercy rule contest.

Christian Talbot went 3-for-3 while Uken, Tommy Redican and Yoder had two hits apiece. Gabe Hammond added a triple.

past CHS, 18-4

The Huskies scored five second-inning runs to snap a 1-all tie and cruised to an 18-4 win over Carson Tuesday afternoon at CHS.

Kyle Glanzmann, Ethan Good and Terin Keller all had two hits for the Senators.

Bishop Manogue scored five first-inning runs and went onto beat Carson, 6-2, in a Northern Division I game at Carson.

Two-first inning errors, a walk and hits by Roslyn Esau, Hailey Merlino and Bailey McLaughlin accounted for the runs.

Carson came back with one in the first on Nicole Brown’s sacrifice fly. Manogue added a run in the fourth and Carson matched it in the bottom of the inning. Neither team scored in the final three innings,

Bailey Allen led Carson with two hits, while Brown and Lauren Lemburg added one each. “We played pretty well after the first inning,” coach Shane Quilling said. “We made three errors, and we should have been out of the inning with just one run and not five. We’re not good enough at the plate to spot a good team like Manogue five runs. We battled and we’re getting better.”
