150 years ago

Removal of the fire bell. Yesterday morning a number of firemen went to work and took down the fire bell and then removed the tower from its old place and set it up in front of the Warren’s new house. The job was well and quickly done, and you may bet your life that we interposed no objections to the removal. A fire bell is the nicest kind of thing in its place, but we don’t need one at our sanctum window.

130 years ago

Night before last M.E. Glover said that when he discovered a fire in Rickey’s shed that he found Matt Brannan inside the house. Someone told Brannan that Glover accused him of firing the building and Brannan blacked Glover’s eye. No arrest was made.

100 years ago

Timothy Lyons, a prominent probate attorney and Ida Diamond, a clairvoyant, were found dead in her San Francisco room recently. Diamond left a “to whom it may concern” letter, charging Lyons led a Jekyl and Hyde life. The police believe the woman rose during the night, wrote the letters, stuffed paper and rags under the door and turned the gas on. Lyons died when he awoke, found himself suffocating and died while trying to escape.

70 years ago

With its Easter concert over and termed highly pleasing by over 1,000 who heard their melodious strains, the Carson volunteer band today announced its next public appearance would be Memorial Day.

50 years ago

A leading British space scientist, Sir Bernard Lovell, says the current furor in the United States over unidentified flying objects is “incredible nonsense.”

30 years ago

Longtime Carson City educator Robert Jepsen was selected by the community as “Man of the Years” during the 17th Annual Community Awards Banquet.

Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
