Wave sweeps Lowry in SENIOR DAY GRAVITAS

The Greenwave varsity baseball team snared the series it wanted, sweeping the Lowry Buckaroos in Fallon’s last home series of the season, 19-6 on Friday, 10-1 and 6-0 in the doubleheader on Saturday.

Greenwave head coach Lester de Braga said he was definitely pleased to see his team perform to it capabilities, especially on Senior Day for the Wave’s veterans and in Fallon’s first sweep since early in the season.

““Last week we started to get back on track, and there are still some things we can work on but for the most part I was very pleased for Senior Day today,” de Braga said. “All the seniors got to play in the last home game and did a good job so I’m very proud of the team.”

Lowry (8-14-1 overall, 5-3 in DI-A) heads home to face Truckee on Thursday while Fallon (14-8 overall, 11-6 in DI-A) played at Fernley on Tuesday.

Lowry head coach Ron Espinola has two series ahead for his Bucks and said every league game is as important as the last moving forward.

“Fallon outplayed us in every facet of the game,” Espinola said. “We didn’t really put our A game out there and they were better.”

Things looked good for the Bucks on Friday, though, in the early innings of the series opener. Lowry led 2-1 by the top of the first inning after scoring runs from reak the tie.

Fallon scored in four runs in the second inning alone, two off RBIs and two of sacrifice steals by base runners on first to achieve a 7-3 lead by the bottom of the second.

The crown of Fallon’s performance was the third inning, holding Lowry runless while the Wave put eight more runs on the board from bases loaded RBIs. The Bucks attempted to even the score in the fourth inning, managing three runs to Fallon’s next four, but after two more scoreless innings Fallon won by the 10-run mercy rule over Lowry.

The Wave took less time to jump ahead on the second game with senior pitcher Kendall Johnson on the mound, hurling a no-hitter for the first five innings until Donovan scored on Lowry’s Jason Smith’s hit in the sixth inning. Fallon had little trouble piling on runs against Lowry pitchers Jake Barnes and Anthony Good. One of the biggest hits of the afternoon was Johnson’s three-run hit to drive in Brock Uptain, Clay Davison and Alex Mendez in the top of the sixth.

The Bucks’ last at bat ended with junior Nico Espanola out at first.

Lowry returned for the second game of the doubleheader slightly more energized, holding Fallon scoreless in the first inning with veteran Kyle Schultz on the mound. The unpredicted shutout began with a triple by Fallon’s Branden Beeghly, who later scored.

The Wave’s Mike Porras brought in Coverston for Fallon’s second run, and a series of RBIs and base hits to left field soon let the Wave take the series.

“Obviously from what we saw we need to work on everything,” Espinola said when asked what he would be drilling in practice before facing Truckee on Thursday. “Our pitchers did ok for us. They threw some strikes generally speaking, but defensively and offensively we struggled in all three games.”
