The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: To those involved in a program in which 20 Northern Nevada Correctional Center inmates are planting thousands of sagebrush seeds to restore sage grouse habitat across Northern Nevada. Along with restoring the habitat, the program is also obviously a restoration project for the inmates, giving them training to possibly enter the landscaping and gardening industries.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Five Carson City Sheriff’s Deputies Michael Gibson, Erin McMahon, Chris Rivera, Jimmy Surratt and Josh Chaney for being honored for their efforts in DUI and underage drinking enforcement.
SILVER DOLLAR: To all of the educators and employees who were honored as Employees of the Year by the Carson City School District for 2015-2016.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson Lodge No. 1 Free and Accepted Masons for raising $7,000 at its poker tournament for youth organizations in Carson City including Rainbow Girls, Carson High School Scholarships, Carson High Safe Graduation as well as the preservation fund of the historic, original V&T Railroad Depot.
WOODEN NICKEL OR SILVER DOLLAR: You decide on this ingenuity. The Appeal is neither endorsing or condemning World Naked Gardening Day, an annual holiday celebrating Nudism in Nature on May 7 as the Appeal obviously wants to make sure whatever people do in this state, it’s legal. On World Naked Gardening Day, people are encouraged to tend to the various flora around or outside their home while in the nude. The event is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of every May.
