SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: National Night Out brings community together

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson City Sheriff’s Office for hosting last week’s National Night Out and to all those who attended and supported the event. Many of the first responders and military agencies who serve us were at the event. While they are all part of this community every day, last week’s event really demonstrated the togetherness of this community with those who protect us.

SILVER DOLLAR: Staying with the theme of recognizing first responders, we again this summer thank all the firefighters who have been battling wildfires, including those in Northern Nevada and north of Reno, keeping homes safe from the fires.

WOODEN NICKEL: To all those who booed Catherine Byrne, a military mom, who confronted Republican vice presidential candidate Mike Pence over Donald Trump’s comments concerning the Khan family, who’s son was killed in Iraq, during a rally Monday at the Carson Nugget. But...
