ACTION-PACKED WEEKEND

All eyes turn to Fallon this weekend.

The Greenwave varsity football team returns to the gridiron tonight in its first game of the season, a rivalry away game against the Fernley Vaqueros at 7 p.m. Fallon coach Brook Hill’s Wave has its work cut out for the team since state champion gunslinger Connor Richardson graduated, since the Vaqueros’ returning arms Ren Arroyo and Zach Burns presented challenges for even the undefeated Fallon team last year. Tonight will be the first glimpse of how junior Christian Nemeth leads his team, and how well he utilizes key offensive weapons such as senior receiver Cade Vercellotti, who set the bar in yards for other league receivers last year, his first with the Wave.

Looking beyond high school, the Fallon Fights has arguably one of the biggest cards in nine years with featherweights Guy Robb vs. Miguel Marriaga, Robb’s first 10-round fight in his career and his first appearance at the Rural Rumble with the National American Boxing Organization (NABO) Featherweight Championship on the line.

Robb is joined by Reno native and Fallon favorite Oscar Vasquez battling his first 10-rounds as well against Janiel Riviera for the NABO Light Flyweight Championship in what said will be a make-or-break fight in his career. The fights take place at the Churchill County Fairgrounds with the weigh-in tonight and the bouts Saturday at 6 p.m.

Back on football, the Pop Warner Youth Football ends its season in Fallon with the annual Jamboree on Saturday, joining teams from all over Western Nevada to end the year right. The jamboree, expecting more than 15,000 in attendance, begins Saturday with weigh-ins at 8 a.m. and games beginning at 9 a.m. A tailgate is set for tonight at 5 p.m.

Fallon’s race tracks also know how to end their summer of racing. Top Gun’s second-to-last points races are tonight from 6-12 p.m. and Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the E.T. Summit Series. The final race is Sept. 16. Rattlesnake Raceway’s final points race takes place Sept. 10 with the 30th Annual Dirt Track Challenge on Sept. 24. The Dirt Track Challenge, LARA Promoter Chris Lumsden said, draws in Rattlesnake’s highest car count with more than 100 racers, while Top Gun board member John Stauverman said he has also seen record turnouts of both cars and fans at Top Gun this year with the Las Vegas E.T. finale only two qualifying races away.
