Tonight’s football games officially kick off the new school year throughout the region.

Fallon begins its defense of last year’s state championship tonight when it travels to Fernley for the cross-valley rivalry battle. Both teams met last in the 2015 regional playoffs when the Greenwave added to its winning streak en route to the state championship.

But football’s not the only game in town.

The girls golf team competed in an icebreaker tournament this week in Carson and begin league play on Wednesday, while the tennis teams take on North Tahoe and cross country competes in its first meet next week. The volleyball squad travels to Wooster on Wednesday for a non-conference battle while the soccer teams travel next weekend to Spring Creek for a two-day tournament.

Cross Country heads to the Douglas Class Races today in its first meet, while Lady Wave golf begins its season Wednesday at 9 a.m. in a tournament at the Ruby View Golf Course in Elko since former coach Phil Pinder handed the reigns down to Sandy Vanderbeek.
