Carson City area prep roundup: CHS falls in boys basketball

SAN FRANCISCO — Mission outscored Carson in three of the four quarters to post a 67-43 win over the Senators in the opening round of the 58th annual Crusader Classic at Riordan High School Thursday night.

It was 39-33 after three, but Mission outscored Carson 28-10 in the fourth period.

Carson returns to action today at 3 against Righetti-Santa Maria.

“We are going to have to play a lot better (against Righetti) than we did tonight,” said assistant coach Dick Lee. “It wasn’t a 24-point game. We had it to six a couple of times, but it got out of hand late.

“We had a three-minute stretch where we had trouble getting the ball up the floor.”

The Senators got 19 points and 15 rebounds from Tez Allen, who was also credited with 11 of Carson’s 39 turnovers. The Senators went a solid 13-for-28 from the field, but Mission scored 37 points off the 39 turnovers.

Trent Robison scored nine points and pulled down eight rebounds. Sevon Mandoki added five points. Carson had a whopping 40-22 edge on the boards, but only had 14 second-chance points.

The Senators played without Jayden DeJoeph and Geraet Rauh, who will be out of action until Dec. 15 for breaking team rules.

Muckers lose twice

HAWTHORNE — Virginia City opened the Hawthorne Invitational with two losses on Thursday.

The Muckers lost 61-20 to Yerington and 46-27 to White Pine.

VC returns to action today with games against Bishop and Lovelock.

Tommy Redican scored seven points and Ireland Franklin added four in the loss to Yerington. Against White Pine, Franklin scored 10, Tanner Uken tallied six and Christian Talbot chipped in four.

Dayton dropped by Hug

TRUCKEE — Hug outscored Dayton 30-20 in the second half en route to a 52-42 win at the Truckee Invitational.

Dayton plays either Colfax or Truckee today at 3.

The game was tied at 22 at half. “We showed a lot of first-game tentativeness in some of our passing and shooting,” said assistant coach Kevin Ply. “If we make our layups we could have won by 10.”

J.J. Ply led Dayton with 16 points, Trevor Burrows added 13 and Weston Hill seven.

Carson girls lose

SPARKS — The Senators fell to 0-2 after a 56-42 loss to Atwater in the opening round of the High Sierra Challenge at Spanish Springs High School.

Carson, 0-2, faces South Tahoe at 6 p.m. today at Reno High.

“We played much better,” CHS coach Melissa Larsen said. “We had too many turnovers; throwing the ball away. We were much more aggressive and attacked the basket better than we did in our first game (loss to Reno).”

Carson trailed 26-23 at the half and 38-34 after three. Atwater outscored the Senators 18-8 in the final period. Lauren Lemburg led the CHS offense with 13 points and Haley Garver added seven. Abbey Paulson chipped in six.

Dayton girls drop two

HAWTHORNE — The Dust Devils dropped their opening game of the Hawthorne Invitational to Smith Valley, 63-44, Thursday afternoon.

Elora Neep led Dayton’s offense with 15 points and Abby Sikora added 13 and five rebounds. Aleaa McGill-Howe added nine points and two assists, and Kristina Mason finished with six points and seven rebounds.

In the nightcap, Whittell knocked off Dayton, 53-33.

Sikora had 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals, and Neep added eight points and seven rebounds. Cassie Dickenson finished with six points, five rebounds and four steals.

“Whittell was a tough game for us,” Dayton coach Kelly Frantz said. “Whittell did a good job defensively. We did get a lot of shots off, but couldn’t connect. We took too long getting aggressive and we weren’t rotating on defense quickly, which allowed Whittell to get open shots all game.

“Good to get our season started, I would have liked to have picked up a win today but we have two more days to come out and play better ball. I was really pleased to see Abby and Elora getting lots of shots, and I can see they are getting more confident on the perimeter.”

FRESHMAN BASKETBALL

Carson topples Reno

The Senators opened the season with a 45-40 win over Reno on Tuesday.

Bradley Maffei led the way with 13 points.
