Helping the needy: It is proposed, so we understand, by some of our Carson ladies to get up a bail, on Wednesday next, at the Pavilion for the benefit of Mr. Thomas Poulter, a poor but worthy man who, by the death of his wife, is left with four little children to take care of. The object is a worthy one and should succeed.

William Lovelady and Alfred Coombs, convicted in Humboldt County of horse stealing, arrived in this city yesterday to serve out a sentence of eight years each at hard labor in the State Prison.

100 years ago

The lid was screwed down tight on the gambling proposition in Tonopah last night. On Friday, the grand jury ordered that all gambling in Tonopah be stopped and that evening Grant Crumley, foreman of the grand jury, in company with Sheriff C.L. Slavic, visited all the resorts about town and gave the order to close everything at 6 Sunday night and at the same time emptied all the money out of the slot machines and turned them against the wall.

Pointing out that Carson City residents should be awakened to the fact that one of the west’s finest winter sports areas is only scant miles from the capital city, members of the local ski club last night pledged themselves to boost snow sports here during the coming season.

The final 1966 big game season got underway with the opening of the Desert of Nelsons bighorn sheep season in Southern Nevada. Totally, there were 78 sheep tags awarded to resident hunters and seven tags awarded to non-hunters.

The streets may become just a little safer for Nevada’s law enforcement officers when a million-dollar computer system goes on line at Nevada Highway Patrol headquarters in Carson City.
