The Salvation Army serving Carson City and Douglas County are seeing their Red Kettle donations are down by nearly 35 percent compared to funds raised last Christmas season.
“This is a big concern to see that our kettle income is down by this much,” said Captain Mark Cyr, the Salvation Army’s Commanding Officer. “If the trend continues it could cut back on the services we can provide.”
Kettle gifts stay locally to provide Christmas assistance, food assistance, youth camps and many other year-round programs. This holiday season, The Salvation Army serving Carson City and Douglas County will assist approximately 625 families with food boxes and toys.
“The Red Kettle is a 100 plus year tradition of The Salvation Army and in smaller communities, we really rely on this income to support the programs that we have,” said Captain Cyr. “We will do what we have to continue the services we provide, but it would really be helpful if we can get the communities’ support this last week before Christmas. A handful of change, a few bills or a gift card dropped in a kettle can make all the difference in one of our neighbors’ lives.”
The Red Kettle campaign will continue through Dec. 24 at various storefronts throughout Carson City and Douglas County.
