Gov. Brian Sandoval has named Steve Canavero state Superintendent of Education.

Canavero has been interim superintendent since last September when Dale Erquiaga left the position to become Sandoval’s chief strategy officer.

“Steve has been instrumental in implementing the sweeping reforms and successfully fulfilling the mission behind the unprecedented investment recently made in Nevada’s public education systems,” said Sandoval..

He praised Canavero’s understanding of those education initiatives and his commitment to accountability in gauging results.

Prior to taking the interim superintendent’s post, Canavero was deputy superintendent in charge of student achievement and before that director of the state Public Charter School authority. He has a Ph.D. in educational leadership.
