VC pulls off thrilling upset

RENO — The Virginia City boys basketball team pulled off a thrilling upset to move within one win of the State Tournament.

The Muckers seeded No. 4 out of its league beat No. 1 seed Eureka from its league 39-38 in the Northern Division IV playoffs Thursday.

Virginia City advanced to the semifinals in which it takes on Hawthorne at 4:40 p.m. today at Wooster, with the winning claiming one of two state berths.

Colt Hess, who had 21 points, scored with 1:30 left to give Virginia City a 39-38 lead. After Eureka missed a shot, VC turned the ball over with 16 seconds left, but Eureka missed a shot at the buzzer, securing the Muckers’ win.

Hugh Fonzo added 10 points for the Muckers.
