Annual car show is asset to city

It occurred to me while I was filling out my application for the Silver Dollar Car Show this year that I should tell the people of Carson City what a wonderful event it is. We are from Oregon and have been attending this great show for about 10 years or so.

A great many hours and money go into this event, and you should be thanking those who work so very hard to make this happen. This show benefits the entire city and its citizens. It brings in revenue to the motels, restaurants, casino and tourist attractions, as well as to the show itself.

This show is well done and a credit to those who work so hard to make it fun for those participating, as well as those who come to get a nostalgic look and a walk down memory lane.

The show outranks Hot August Nights. It is family oriented, classy, friendly and not spread out all over the place with too many people, drunks, pickpockets, and all of the social problems that Reno has.

We encourage everyone who loves cars to either show off their car, or just come and look during all of the events that are free. Entry is not that expensive if you are interested in a couple of events, and for those of us who are diehards, the expense for the full ride is a great deal also.

We thank all of those who work so hard for the rest of us to have fun at your spectacular show.

Leave downtown alone

I read the letter to the editor by Phyllis Whited about changing downtown, and, Phyllis, you are absolutely right.

The reason this is going on is because the Board of Supervisors do whatever they want and don’t give a damn about the citizens’ rights or ideas.

I think what they should do is leave downtown the way it is, put the fences back up, and get rid of or move all businesses that do not attract families down by the old Kmart building where there are spaces available and have been since they were built years ago.

Then put in an ice cream shop, a bakery, an arcade, and a buffet restaurant. Now that is family friendly.

Also, put parking in the rear at Curry Street, and these businesses should have back-door entrances. Also, maybe a Fed Ex office where people can mail packages and letters.

But you and I know the Board of Supervisors would never go for that because it might actually work and the people might like it.

Good luck to WNC softball team

I just want to wish the Western Nevada College softball team good luck.

You play hard, and you practice very hard. You are the best, even though it is the last season. You are the best.

Gun laws violate state constitution

I see the Legislature passed more laws barring people charged with domestic violence from buying or possessing firearms.

While I do believe people who commit domestic violence should not own guns because they have already shown they cannot control themselves, the constitution of the great state of Nevada, according to Article 1, Section 1, and Article 1, Section 11, say these laws violate our constitution, and so do the laws barring ex felons from owning firearms.

Now I do not want active criminals to have guns either, but if the laws violate our constitution, then they need to be removed and the Legislature needs to quit being lazy and pass the correct amendments.

Downtown motels keep homeless off street

To Carson City Supervisor Karen Abowd:

I am so sorry the local motels don’t fit into your downtown beautification plan! If the majority of the motel residents are forced to leave, they will be camping out behind the trash can of your lovely business!

Several of these individuals went to war to protect your freedom. Think about that for a while.
