Teachers should receive pay increase

I was a college professor and administrator for 40 years in California before retiring to Carson City in 2006. I wanted to continue working and looked at various options. I rented cars for Hertz at Lake Tahoe for about two years and made a decent salary, fringe benefits, and stock options. Although I enjoyed the contact with the public, I really wanted to get back in education.

I started working for the Carson City School District several years ago and was surprised when I found out my salary was about $13 an hour. Honestly, I think a decent teacher working with the children in the community is worth more than $13 an hour.

At some point it is my hope that the district’s administration and board will review and increase our hourly rate. Our daughter makes $150 a day when she substitutes for the Downey School District in California.
