Death of a great humorist. Charles F. Brown, alias “Artemus Ward,” has died. His quaint and genial writings had unfitted us to read or speak his name without a feeling of merriment.

All sorts. Editorials in the Times-Review are being used as sermons by Tuscarora divines. There is better skating at Washoe Lake than ever before. The plumbers are growling because the weather is not cold enough to burst pipes. Wild geese are said to be tougher this year than usual. This is one of the results of a Democratic Administration.

110 Years Ago

Sam Davis. The Journal desires to extend its congratulations to Sam Davis, a brilliant Nevadan who has received a merited recognition by being engaged to write for the Harper publications.

80 Years Ago

Gold quotation. The price of gold is $35 per ounce, 20 cents higher than the London quotation.

50 Years Ago

Attraction. Sundown Town (Joy Lake Road), an attraction 20 miles south of Reno has burned down. The fire leveled the souvenir shop, a cottage and the saloon-restaurant. Sundown was opened by Buster Keaton Jr. in 1959 and closed down two years later. Plans are to rebuild.

20 Years Ago

Weather. After two days of torrential rain and then snow, the city has moved from flooding mode to snow removal. Snow also caused closure of Morgan Mill Road from Empire Ranch Road to Deer Run Road.
