Little race cars hand-crafted by local kids, like this former winner, will be tearing down the Pinewood Derby track on the first day, Saturday, Sept. 17, of Dayton Valley Days.
The Dayton Valley Days street festival scheduled Sept. 17-18 will feature a Pinewood Derby sponsored by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Mason Valley Dayton Units.
The derby, open to all area youths, is the highlight of children’s activities during the street fair, which include face painting, games and art projects. Car building kits for children to participate in the derby will be available on Saturday, Sept. 17 in the Kids Zone next to the Dayton Community Center on Pike Street. Racers are encouraged to build their cars early in the day so they don’t miss the fun in the afternoon when the racing starts. Prizes will be awarded to winning cars in several age categories.
The two-day festival in Dayton’s Old Town district is the largest event in the community each year and draws thousands of visitors and community members. It helps raise funds for restoration of the historic schoolhouse turned community center and several nonprofit organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club.
In addition to the Free Kids Zone and Pinewood Derby, this year’s festival schedule includes events throughout each day, including a pancake breakfast each morning, daily live entertainment, Railroad Days at the historic Carson & Colorado Depot, tours of the historic firehouse/jail and Dayton Museum, nationally-sanctioned chili cook-off, a huge outdoor craft fair, Saturday Hometown Parade, Gold Creek Show n’ Shine on Saturday (classic cars and trucks), Sunday Pet Parade, a silent auction and more.
