One of Michael Raher’s devotions in life is to be an ally to every local business by expanding their reach.

Now as Director of Sales at the Nevada Appeal, Raher is determined to create a stronger footprint throughout Northern Nevada.

“I’m a huge community-media person,” he said. “I have always wanted to oversee sales for a group of publications and combine it with my love of the mountains.”

Raher accepted the new role with the Sierra Nevada Media Group of Swift Communications on July 22. Raher replaced Tonya Champa, who accepted the role as product and marketing manager for the Sierra Nevada Media Group.

Raher’s 28-year journey in sales and marketing began near his hometown in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. He designed wet suits for the surfing company, Piping Hot, and tested material quality by hitting some of the waves.

When he moved to the United States in 1995, Raher continued his passion in marketing. He managed a community publication in Ramona, Calif., prior to joining the Nevada Appeal.

“We’re looking to continue to grow in our ability to serve our local audiences. Tonya’s knowledge of this area and our company will allow her to get up to speed quickly in our marketing efforts and in helping to build and grow new products,” said Brooke Warner, general manager of Swift Communications’ Northern Nevada-based operations. “I’m thrilled to bring Mick into the sales mix. He’s a natural sales leader and his expertise and background in publishing and marketing is key to helping create powerful solutions for our advertisers, helping them connect effectively to the consumers who want and need them.”

Building a team within a marketing staff is essential to success, Raher said. With that, he hopes to build the mind-set by providing coaching to teams.

“I’m a big fan of coaching others,” he said. “I’m impressed with the products we provide and I admire the atmosphere.”

The mountains are another atmosphere Raher takes advantage to enjoy. He makes frequent trips to Lake Tahoe with his wife, Laurie, and their two children, Noah, 12, and Jacob, 11. Together, they kayak, tube and swim in the lake. When the winter season hits, they hit the slopes by skiing and snowboarding.
