Community Spotlight: Saints march to undefeated season

The Saints capped an undefeated season with three wins last week en route to the championship in the Talents Carson City NFL Flag Football League.

The Saints edged the 49ers 32-18, topped the Seahawks 58-36 and slipped past the Packers, 46-35, to finish the season 12-0. The Packers, who beat the Seahawks 46-24 and the 49ers, 47-41, finished at 6-6. The 49ers went 1-2 last week, edging the Seahawks, 46-45, for their only win to finish the season 6-6. The Seahawks went 0-12.

Zach Guthrie had 16 TD passes last week and Alex Myrehn had nine TDs. Liam Kordonowy threw for 11 TD passes for the Packers and Hunter Green scored seven times. Trevor Marlin led the 49ers with 12 TD passes and Kory Grist had five scores. Gabriel Fanning and Joel Altamirano had four scores each for the Seahawks.

Silver Oak has

Beginning June 20, Silver Oak will offer local boys and girls the opportunity to learn the game of golf.

Eddie Shope, a Northern Nevada youth golf teacher, sill covers the basics of the game. Classes are divided by age (5 to 17) and experience. The first class runs June 20-24 and the second class goes from July 18-22. For more information, call 841-7000 ext. 2 or go to silveroakgolf.com.

Gaston triumphs

at Empire Ranch

Gene Gaston scored 47 points to win Flight A at Empire Ranch Senior Men’s Club Stableford tournament on May 26. Tom Welton was second with 42 and Dale Guy was third with 41.

Mike Logue won Flight B with a 43 followed by Dennis Justin and Tom Sawyer with 41 points each. Dave Ziegler took Flight C with a 43, and Skip Yokota and Nick Paul also had 43s. Ivan Lepire won Flight D with a 44, two points better than Martin Johnson and Joe Gibson. Bill Barker won Flight E with a 45, three points ahead of Dan Rodgers and four ahead of Maurice Dias.

Gary Dalen, John Pearson, Marty Martinez and Fred Olesek had closest to the hole honors.

Easy win at

Thunder Canyon

Steve and Ryan Sear, and Jeanne Brennan and Mary Lou Boardman shot 102 to win Thunder Canyon Country Club’s Memorial Day Shamble event.

Second place went to the team of Carl Overmier, Don Burke Sr., Don Burke Jr. and Cheryl Burke who shot a 109. Glen and Jackie Chaney, and Bob and Monica Pike were third at 111.

Couples League today

at Carson Valley

Carson Valley Golf Club is hosting a weekly Couples League at 5:30 on Wednesdays. The cost for 9 holes, cart, dinner and $5 prize fund is $35 per player.

On Saturday, a couples tournament is set for 9 a.m. The cost is $50 per player for the 18-hole 2-person scramble. Lunch and $5 prize fund is part of the entry fee.

• Marc Menezes shot 71 to win a Flight A tiebreaker over Jeff Schreiber at CVGC’s Vice President’s Cup. Bob Pemberton was third with a 76.

Richard Torok topped Augie Martinez in a tiebreaker for Flight B honors. Both golfers shot a 70. Charles Poe was third with a 70. Jim Tavernier won Flight C with a 68, a shot better than Neil Notley and six better than Matt Budjako.

• Roger Hala, Ken Smitreski and Larry Rutledge won the May 22 Carson Valley Men’s Club tournament. The format was one gross and one net score. Second went to Fred Coons, Charles Poe, Jim Taverbnier and John Guidicatti. Third went to Jeff and Gary Schreiber, Richard Torok and Joe Morrison. After the event, the group donated $220 to the Boys & Girls Clubs.

Kremp wins at

Dayton Valley

Jona Kremp shot 48 to win Flight 1 low gross in the Mutt and Jeff game played by the Dayton Valley Women’s Golf Club. Denise Johnson shot 41 to win low net.

In Flight 2, Patty Cooke, Reita Bass and Terri Paden tied for Flight 2 low gross with a 40. Carli Vandervort shot 37 to win low net. Mary Epperson and Laura Hunt tied for first in Flight 3 low gross with a 52. Bernadette Wyatt shot 36 to win low net. Nancy Staley shot 51 to win low gross in Flight 4, while Loretta Szymanski won low net with a 36. Chris Bunnell won low gross in Flight 5 with a 63.
