Carson City Sheriff’s office urges caution during changing weather conditions

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is advising drivers to be cautious on the roadways with the changing weather conditions.

Officials are advising travelers to drive slower and be more observant for unseen obstacles, as well as pedestrians in the road. Because visibility decreases when rain and snow mix, stopping distances need to be increased should drivers need to stop suddenly.

As a pedestrian, wearing reflective clothing during foul weather makes it easier for drivers to see. Officials said to cross the roadway only when sure the driver can see you and move out of the way should the vehicle be unable to stop due to weather and road conditions.

Even in daylight hours, while it may be easier for drivers to see pedestrians, wet, snowy or icy roads make it difficult to stop in an emergency. Similar principles apply with other vehicles — remember to account for more distance between vehicles in front of you in case of a sudden stop. Don’t tailgate or cut off other drivers while in a hurry and if a vehicle is tailgating you, move over and let it pass you, officials said.

“Your attention needs to be on the road and on the operation and control of your vehicle which could lose traction during bad weather,” said Sgt. Scott McDaniel. “Put away the cell phone and let your voice mail take the call. Nothing is more important than your arriving home safely.”
