Prep roundup: Big days for Dayton baseball, Carson track

YERINGTON — The Dayton High baseball team improved to 4-0 with wins over Yerington and Bishop Saturday morning at the Yerington Tournament,

The Dust Devils knocked of Yerington, 8-5, and then blanked Bishop, 6-0. The Dust Devils open league play Friday at home against Elko at 3 p.m.

“I was impressed with our starting pitching today,” coach Mike Burrows said. “Trevor (Burrows) and Isaac (Von Schoff) only being sophomores gives us something positive to look for down the road. We kicked th ball around a little and had some baserunning mistakes but we will get those corrected.”

Burrows and Von Schoff combined to strike out 17 and allow just six hits on the day. Burrows fanned 10 and gave up two earned runs against Yerington, while Von Schoff allowed just three hits against Bishop.

The Dust Devils scored six of their eight runs in the first two innings against Yerington. Jesse Schmidt and Gage Duke drove in two run apiece, while Zach Woitas, Dylan Baker and Von Schoff had RBIs. Burrows had two hits and scored twice.

Against Bishop, the Dust Devils scored once in the first and four times in the second. Woitas, Schmidt and Mark Rainey all had two hits and one RBI apiece. Jacob Nelson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Carter has big

day for Senators

Asa Carter uncorked a career-best leap of 46-10 1/4 in the triple jump, won the long jump (20-9), ran a leg on the winning 1600-meter relay and placed second in the 200 to lead Carson to a win in Saturday’s conference met against Douglas and Wooster.

The Senators finished with 103 points while Douglas had 93.5 and Wooster 57.5. In the girls meet, Douglas won with 117.5, Carson was second with 80 and Wooster was third at 49.5.

Ian Schulz was a double winner for the Senators, posting impressive marks in the shot put (54-3 1/2) and the discus (160-3). Greg Wallace won the high jump at 6-4 and was second in the long jump at 19-10. Logan Menzel was second in the shot (41-9) and discus (136-8). Ian Van Rensselaer was third in the 1600 (4:47.33) and fourth in the 3200 (11:07.37). Caulin Bartley and Brandon Basa went 2-3 in the 400 (54.19 and 54.47).

Athena Favero and Abigail Pradere each won two events for the Senators. Favero won the 100 hurdles (18.9) and the 300 hurdles (48.76). Pradere won the 1600 (5:34.61) and the 3200 (12:57.20). Abby Paulson won the triple jump (31-5). Erica Basa was third in the 100 (14.97) and third in the triple jump (30-0). Azlynn McFadden was second in the shot (27-8) and fourth in the discus (89-5). Dajarrah Navarro was second in the high jump at 4-6.

Dayton teams 3rd

at Fallon meet

FALLON — Dayton’s boys and girls each finished third on Saturday at the 1A meet.

Fernley won the boys met with 97 while Fallon was second at 94. Dayton had 48.5 and South Tahoe 30.5. On the girls side, Fernley had 93, Fallon 85, Dayton 69 and South Tahoe 21.

J.J. Ply won the pole vault at 12-feet and the 110 high hurdles at 16.24. Zach Hawley won the shot (52-6 1/2) and was second in the discus (148-9). Brady Heusser was also a bright spot for Dayton, finishing second in the 800 (2:15.81) and 3200 (11:19.78) and taking third in the 1600 (4:58.88).

Zaria Landis won the 1600 (6:19.86) and the 3200 (13:39.96) to lead the Dayton girls. Grace Wells won the 400 (67.47), was third in the high jump (4-6) and was fourth in the 200 (30.31). Rebecca Mason won the high jump (4-8).

Carson boys, girls

drub North Valleys

Carson High opened its swimming season by sweeping North Valleys Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Facility.

The boys won 157-49 and the girls won 225-47.

Dagen Kipling won the 200 free (1:52.43) and the 100 fly (56.47), Alexander Gutierrez won the 200 IM (2:14.58) and the 100 back (1:01.17) and Reece Canfield took the 500 free (5:34.29) and the 100 breast (1:14.85). Matthew Hill won the 100 free (52.09) and Dylan Popoff won the 50 free (26.0). The Senators won every relay event.

On the girls side, America Brena Gutierrez won the 200 IM (2:30.10) and the 500 free (6:00.72). Camryn Aten won the 200 free (2:20.47) and placed third in the 100 free (1:04.40). Nora Streng won the 50 free (29.89) and was second in the 100 fly (1:20.30). Kalysta Branco won the 100 back (1:15.95) and was third in the 100 fly (1:22.77). Morgan Nelson won the 100 free (1:01.96) and was second in the 200 IM (2:38.75), and Hannah Presley won the 100 fly (1:12.87) and was second in the 100 free (1:02.77). Christy Krahn won the 100 breast (1:14.96). The CHS girls won every relay event.

SOFTBALL

Carson splits DH

WINNEMUCCA — Carson opened its season by splitting a doubleheader against Lowry on Saturday.

The Senators were originally scheduled to play in Sacramento this weekend, but the tournament was postponed until April because of bad weather, and CHS was able to find an opponent.

In the opener, Carson scored twice in the top of the seventh to pull out a 14-13 win in a game that featured four lead changes. In the nightcap, Lowry grabbed a 4-1 win.

Carson led 12-7 after five, but Lowry scored six times in the sixth to take a 13-12 lead before the Senators came back for the win.

Nicole Brown and Jailene Salcedo each had three hits and three RBI in the opener. Salcedo had a homer and double. Bailey Allen also had three hits and drove in two runs, and Lauren Lemburg had three hits and an RBI. Kassidy Cooley and Camiell Simpson had two hits each.

Salcedo was the tough-luck loser in the nightcap, allowing seven hits and striking out six.

Allen, Salcedo and Simpson had two hits each.
