Dayton baseball and softball fall to Elko

DAYTON — Elko struck for 16 runs in it final two at-bats to grab a 20-0 win over Dayton in the Northern 1A conference opener for both schools.

“This was a reality check for our young ballclub,” Dayton coach Mike Burrows said. “Coming off a weekend where we played schools primarily our size, we got a taste today of what big schools in our league can offer. The kids understand that this is a process and won’t happen overnight. Our goal is to get to the level where Elko and Fallon play at.”

Dayton starter Trevor Burrows gave up a run in each of the first four innings, and then Elko exploded for five runs to take a 9-0 lead.

“We had a number of pitches we wanted to hold Trevor to,” coach Burrow said. “That (the 5th) is where the game got away from us, We never got anything going offensively all day. You aren’t going to win a lot of games when you can muster only two hits.”

Elko exploded for 11 runs in the sixth off two Dayton relievers.

The game was called after six innings because of the 10-run rule.

The teams collide today at 11 a.m. in a doubleheader.

Elko rallies for win

DAYTON — The Indians overcame a 10-8 deficit with five in the fourth and five more in the fifth en route to a 22-12 win over the Dust Devils on Friday afternoon.

Elko out-hit Dayton, 22-4, on the day. The Dust Devils managed just two runs in their last four at-bats.

Aleea Howe drove in two runs with a double, while Alura Greenwalt, Marisa Hartman. Elizabeth Vincent and Briana Hill also had RBIs. The other two Dayton runs came home on an error. Hill, Hartman, Howe and Casie Dickenson had a hit apiece.

Dayton hosts Elko today at 11 a.m. in a doubleheader.
