A five-member southern rock and bluegrass band is headlining Community Chest, Inc.’s seventh annual A Night to Imagine benefit at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, at Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City.

Poor Man’s Whiskey, out of Northern California, has six studio albums under its belt. It participates in regional festivals, including High Sierra Music Festival, Yonder Mountain Harvest Festival, Strawberry Music Festival, and others around the world.

Comprised of Josh Brough, Jason Beard, Joshua Zucker, George Smeltz and David Noble, the band plays everything from drums and bass to mandolin and harmonica, with suitcase and keyboard also thrown in.

The band said it has seen exponential growth in the last five years, selling out venues across the country such as the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco. It credits its growth to its ragged and spontaneous style of storytelling and on stage shenanigans.

The annual benefit is the Virginia City nonprofit’s biggest fundraiser of the year. All proceeds help support youth development, food security, employment assistance and mental health counseling programs.

“A Night to Imagine makes a difference in the community and ensures the limited services that are available are able to be continued,” said Adrienne Sutherland, clinical director and therapist with Community Chest. “Some services we offer are geared toward children and families, including before and after school youth, employment case management, employment assistance and mental health programs.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Piper’s Opera House is at 12 N. B St. Tickets cost $50 per person.

For tickets, go to www.communitychestnevada.net or at the Red Dog Saloon in Virginia City; Sundance Bookstore in Reno; and Benson’s Feed and Comma Coffee in Carson City.
