Fallon couldn’t muster a comeback this time after it surrendered a five-run fifth inning in an 8-0 road loss to cross-valley Fernley on Wednesday. The loss snaps the Greenwave’s perfect start (6-1) in the Division I-A while the Vaqueros remain perfect at 7-0.
Fallon returns home today to begin a three-game series with Spring Creek. First pitch is at 3 p.m. at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 11 a.m.
Ahead 3-0, Fernley opened the game in the fifth inning off relievers Kendall Johnson and Branden Beeghly.
Johnson hit Brandon Hlade to open the fifth inning before Beeghly allowed a single to Drake Howe and then hit Giovanni Piroddi. Carlos McIntyre smacked a two-run double on the second pitch before Kyle Throckmorton lined a two-out, two-run double, as well, to left center.
Beeghly allowed a run in the sixth inning and finished the game giving up five earned runs on six hits.
Fallon ace Alex Mendez started and pitched two innings, giving up an early run in the first inning before Johnson entered, giving up a pair of runs in two innings. McIntyre tripled in Piroddi in the first inning with two outs.
The Greenwave offense couldn’t get anything going against the Fernley trio of Travis Derley (three innings), Hlade (two) and McIntyre (two).
Derley retired the first seven batters before Clay Davison walked with one out in the third inning. After Kyle Larsen flew out, Marshall Coverston singled to center, giving Fallon runners on first and third with two outs. Jack Swisher flew out to center to end the threat.
Larsen and Coverston singled in the sixth inning, and Ricardo Delgado singled in the seventh inning for Fallon.
