Join Western Nevada College student veterans for the second annual Veterans Suicide Awareness Walk on Saturday, May 7. It begins at 10 a.m.

The 1.3-mile walk from Bully’s Restaurant parking lot,up West College Parkway to the college campus is to honor and remember an alarming number of veterans who have taken their own lives. National data reveal that more veterans die from suicide than in battle. Those statistics indicate that 22 veterans take their lives daily.

To remember the veterans who commit suicide annually, more than 8,000 American flags will be planted on the lawn at the front of WNC’s campus on Friday, May 6.

In 2013, WNC created a Veterans Resource Center on its Carson City campus to assist veterans take advantage of their education resources. WNC also opened a Veterans Resource Center on its Fallon campus on Sept. 21, 2015. In part, these resource centers provide veterans with counseling services, VA benefit information, and tutoring and mentorship.

At last year’s march, the Veterans Resource Center raised $1,000 from the sale of T-shirts and donations. The proceeds were donated to the Northern Nevada Veterans Resource Center to help train people who work with at-risk veterans.
