In recognition of National Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday, June 5, Carson Tahoe Health is hosting “Survivors Expressions,” a free community event in honor of people who have a history of cancer — from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center, 1535 Medical Parkway in north Carson City.

During the celebration, participants can enjoy a complimentary breakfast, free commemorative T-shirts (while supplies last), a one-mile walk, helpful resources on preventing and treating cancer, and an art show featuring creative expressions by local cancer patients, survivors, and loved ones.

“Survivors Expressions provides a special opportunity for cancer survivors to connect with other survivors, celebrate milestones, and recognize the healthcare providers, family, and friends who have supported them along the way,” said Annie Millard, cancer services director at Carson Tahoe Health.

Understanding creative expression has been shown to ease depression, reduce anxiety, and inspire healing, Carson Tahoe Health invites survivors, caregivers and loved ones to represent their personal journeys with cancer through art. From paintings or mixed-media, to music, photography, or quilt work, all creative expressions are welcome, and a culmination of the pieces are going to be on display at the Survivors Expressions Art Show and throughout the week. Artists will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire prior, during, and following their projects to help measure ways of reducing stress and anxiety. To participate, please contact Gini Fletcher, RN at 775-445-7965. Entries must be in by May 23.

As part of Carson Tahoe’s dedication to providing the best possible patient experiences, they are grateful to offer innovative programs that are designed to heal the mind, body, and soul. Through art therapy, music therapy, and guided meditation classes, Carson Tahoe hopes to further enhance the individual healing processes of patients and their loved ones.

“I’d like to recognize the caring and compassionate team of staff and volunteers at the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center for truly going above and beyond to put together this wonderful event,” added Millard. “They are passionate about supporting the community, both inside and outside the hospital walls.”

Survivors Expressions is a free event open to the community. Please RSVP and select your T-shirt size by May 23 at www.CarsonTahoe.com/Cancer-Services. For more information, call 775-445-7500.
