Greenwave golf swings for the team state title

The Greenwave boys golf club might have missed its last chance to move past Elko in the Truckee invitational on Wednesday, but its spot in third place with the state championship around the corner was no longer in question as of Genoa.

Fallon took third behind Elko and Spring Creek at the Old Greenwood Golf Course in Truckee but will join the top three teams at the state competition in Pahrump Tuesday and Wednesday. The Wave’s Kelvin Canne rejoined the leaders, second in individual scores. He and fellow Wave veteran Raymond Plasse were named first-team all-league in addition to finishing third and sixth in the individual bracket with averages of 81.6 and 82.4 respectively.

Canne and Plasse will not be competing in the individual tournament in Vegas, though, since they are a part of a team in the top three competiting for the team title, the first time Fallon has done this since 2011 when it won state.

Fallon coach Rich Evans said its nice taking Canne and Plasse to state again because of their experience from last year’s individual competition.

“It’s really nice having some golfers with some previous state experience, especially since they’ll be used to the pressure and the nerves that come along with it,” Evans said. Those two, along with Mike Richards (18 in individual bracket at 91.8), Chance Wood (23, 94.6), Braxton Hunter (24, 94.8), Nick Smith (30, 97.2) and Dalton Kaady (32, 98.0) make up the Wave’s final roster for Vegas.

With a team average of 447.5 and one weekend of practice before the competition, Evans said by now the boys know what they each need to work on.

“Some spend two hours practicing their driving, some two hours chipping, some putting, it’s all pretty much personalized practices at this point and it’s up to the boys’ own dedication to what they each need to improve upon the most,” Evans said.
