Silver City School House hosting range of events this summer

A busy summer is planned in Silver City, with a range of events scheduled for both children and adults. The events are at the Silver City School House, 385 High St.

An author reading and book signing by Shaun Griffin, an event for adults and teens, is kicking off events at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 5. Griffin, the director of Community Chest, Inc., will read from his new memoir, “Anthem for a Burnished Land.”

Tune into Kids, an arts and science fair hosted by United Way, is from 10 a.m. to noon June 7 at the park near the school house. The event is for parents and children ages 2-6. There will be free books and educational toys and hands-on activities.

Mylo McCormick, the lead guitarist of Mo’z Motley Blues, will present a slide guitar demonstration for adults and teens at 10 a.m. June 14.

Science, math and technology experiments for ages 8-12 is being offered from 10 a.m. to noon June 21 at the park near the school house. Jim Barcellos of 4-H and the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will lead science experiments.

Silver City Arts Group hosts open acoustic music jam sessions on the fourth Saturday of the month from 3 to 5 p.m. The sessions this summer are on June 25, July 23 and Aug. 27.

Hands-on activities that encourage innovation will be provided by some of Nevada’s engineering minds from 10 a.m. to noon June 28. The engineering fair, featuring members of the Society of Women Engineers, is for ages 7-12.

Additional engineering and science activities, a field trip to Shakespeare at Sand Harbor, workshops about illustration, embroidery, and dance, a portrait project, an outdoor concert, fine art shows, and a bike safety rodeo will take place in Silver City in July and August.
