Harold Bagster Herlan was born June 6, 1943, in Seattle, Washington, and died October 4, 2016 in Balboa Naval Medical Center, San Diego, California.


He attended and received his high school diploma in Carson City, Nevada, graduating in the class of 1961.


He resided in San Diego, California for the past 40 years of his life. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science degree from San Diego State University. He was proud of his career as an educator. Prior jobs included working as

an orthopedic orderly, pre Med, and as an electrician. He proudly served his country in the US. Marine Corp, retiring as a Master Sergeant after 22 years of service.


Harold had a passion for coaching an array of sports activities. During his tenure as coach, his players had had over 100 wins. His life events included receiving the navy Achievement Medal, and the Teacher of the Year award in 2009 from the University of Santa Barbara. He also had a love for hiking, and managed to hike over one third of the Pacific Rim Trail from Mexico to the Canadian border.


He is survived by his wife Ruth and son Peter of San Diego; mother Barbara, brother John and cousin David Packwood of Carson City; daughter Ivette (Mrs. Brad) Heutmaker, grandchildren LaRue and Clarissa of Rochester, NY; daughter Kim of Sausalito; and his beloved students and many friends in San Diego and Carson City.


A Celebration of Life service was held on Wednesday October 11, 2016 at the Skyline Church in La Mesa, California
